New Discoveries: A Few Things I’m Enjoying or Looking Forward To.

I present an assortment of stylish, tasty, alluring and engaging things that have grabbed my attention of late.  Feel free to share your latest discoveries and/or opinions of what I have shared here. Be well.

  • Ulla Johnson’s Fall 2018 RTW collection. Oh my word. The colors and textures. She is just brilliant. I love her juxtaposition of high fashion and luxury with accessibility.  This is not by any means an inexpensive line but if you were to choose one or two key pieces a season you could justify the expense. Her pieces are beautifully constructed with the most luxurious custom textiles. She had been around for years but every collection shows more beauty and maturity of design. This fall collection is stunning. Her designs have a timeless feminine and sophisticated aesthetic that make them less about trend and more about longevity. Above are some of my favorite looks from the upcoming fall collection as seen at New York Fashion week.52225016.jpgRipple non dairy half and half.  Random. I know. I have been searching for a non dairy half and half alternative for years. I drink coffee daily and to take the creaminess out of my coffee would basically take the pleasure out of drinking it. I have no dairy allergy or intolerance but I periodically do cleanses or detox and dairy is a no no during that time. I try to limit my dairy intake simply because of all the information I’ve read about its questionable health benefits and potentially damaging effects on skin and digestive health. I will never totally give it up because well, cheese.  I’ve tried soy, coconut, almond and way too many other things to list and was left  with no hope that what I was searching for existed when I saw Ripple half and half at Wholefoods.  I gave it a shot and boy am I glad I did!  It straight up has the texture and creaminess of half and half but without the saturated fat or cholesterol and it is lactose, gluten, nut and soy free. I’m happy to report that it mixes well and has the color and consistancy of real half and half.  I was so excited that I wanted to shout from the roof tops but decided to add it to my list of discoveries this month instead. I strongly encourage you to try this products if your needs are similar to mine.

  • King cake balls from Gambino’s bakery in New Orleans. The Traditional King cake is served on or around Fat Tuesday, the day preceding Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent. In short, the idea is to go all out and party before the observance of Lent when traditionally people in the Christian faith give something up for the 40 day leading up to Easter Sunday. The King cake is served at the pre lenten celebration. The wacky part is that there is a tiny baby figurine (symbolizing baby Jesus) that is baked into the cake. The traditions is that whomever gets the piece of cake with the baby in it has to throw the following years party.  These cake balls are a fancy and indulgent take on the traditional King cake and are not made with baby figures so no worries on having to throw next year’s party!  Just enjoy as we did when our friends brought some over for a dinner party last weekend. The caveat is that unless you are in New Orleans the minimum order to ship is 48 balls so you’ll either have to throw a party, share with friends, or make room in the freezer!

David Bowie Is.  I missed this exhibit when it debuted in the states at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago back in 2014. While researching upcoming exhibits for our annual summer trip to NYC I was delighted to see that the exhibit will be at the Brooklyn Museum during our stay.  This is an exhibit that encompasses his years of work as an artist including costumes, photographs, original handwritten lyrics and artistic direction for both concerts and videos.  Many of these things were from his personal collection and had never been seen by the public until this exhibit was curated.  I’m hoping to see the outfit from the Ashes to Ashes video which was my first exposure to Bowie way back in 1980 watching Top of the Pops and my grandmother’s house in Scotland. I was simultaneously fascinated and confused by him but he has held my attention as an artist since then.

Thankful for: Art, music and fashion.

Wanting: Something from or inspired by the Ulla Johnson fall collection.

I’ve learned: Fashion is cyclical which is why I never get rid of anything! A light umber  sequin sweater that has been living in the back of my closet is coming out again soon.
